If a hurricane or tornado hits, I’ll need a backup filter that can get us water. This thing has three filters that can clean up to 100,000 liters of water. Customer Review: “It feels bigger/heavier than I expected, but that was my fault for not paying attention. However, I wanted the features that it had, and there is always a compromise somewhere. Considering the price, I am tickled. Everything worked as hoped, and it has held up on the trail. I don’t know what to say about water filtering capabilities other than to say that I never got sick, so?? But again, it’s hard to say if it was because of the superior water filtering capability since I didn’t have anything to compare with. I.E., I never drank the water without a filter to know if it was contaminated. Sometimes you can taste the water, and it has a slight odor if the water was stagnant, but after a few filters of the same glass of water, it was easily drinkable with little unpleasantness. One thing to mention is the battery life rocks, and this thing pumps fast. I love the manual backup too. Remember, if one is none, then two is one. Sometimes, redundancy is good.”

Customer Review: “UPDATE:So I recently added the CNOC Vecto 2L bladder to this rig and got rid of my Survivor collapsible canteens. I don’t think I’ll be going back. The Vecto has a large opening to fill, and a 28mm bottle cap to dispense. The Mini screws on perfectly and now I can filter 2L at a time with no issues. Loving this.I also have gotten rid of all my Nalgenes from my backpacking/camping setup. I use them for the office now. I have replaced them with Smartwater bottles. The SW bottles weight less than 2 ounces each, cost $1-2 each and fit the Mini. I have also found I can get two 32 oz SW bottles into a single water bottle pocket on my pack. That means I can either carry 4 liters of water without affecting my internal storage. I have come to really value that decision. When a SW bottle wears out or breaks, I can replace it at pretty much any grocery store for less than $2.ORIGINAL REVIEW (May, 2017):Did some back country camping this past weekend and took the Sawyer Mini out with me for the first time. Reviews on it were good and I was looking for ways to cut down on weight and footprint on my old filter system (a pump). The mini is excellent.I’ve seen a few reviews complaining about the bag it comes with and the time it takes to squeeze “x” amount of water through it. All I have to say is, yes the bag is too small. 16 oz is kind of lame. The quality of the bag? Seems decent enough. I’ll end up replacing it anyway with a pair of Survivor Filter collapsible canteens (32 oz each).As far as the filter goes, I tried it on just some regular old tap water to function test it and get familiar before taking it out. I filtered two liters of water through it (2 Nalgenes) and then back flushed it. I was shocked to see the brown much it filtered out of the tap water! I may get a second on and just screw it onto a SmartWater bottle for drinking at work!The system was easy to use. I don’t know what kind of rush others are in when backpacking, but I’m not. I move at my pace and take my time. i’m not in a race when I’m backpacking or camping. I don’t mind taking a couple minutes to filter some clean drinking/cooking water.The Sawyer Mini works great. I have zero complaints. I appreciate that it comes with the syringe to back flush it and keep it working well. The 16 oz bag is too small, but it works, and unless you’re Hulking out on the thing, it should last just fine. That’s one piece I’ll upgrade, but the filter alone is well worth the cost of the set.”

The replacement pump has been working PERFECTLY! I captured 22 gallons of rainwater when a thunderstorm passed by and since it came off the roof, it was cloudy and full of dirt accumulated over the past year. I ran all of it through this pump and it was as clear as tap water! I’ve been using it to water the plants in my greenhouse and they love it! If I go out into the desert, this will always go with me so I can filter any water source in an emergency. Customer Review: “You don’t have to sit there and pump like with my old one, It has a light so you can set up in the dark, it has a pre-filter and a main filter which is awesome as my old one had a small piece of packing foam over the intake. It also serves as a power bank so you can charge other stuff with it. I walked away from mine and forgot about it for about 10 minutes or so and it not only overflowed the 2 gal container I was filling but it left a huge puddle under it and was still running. I used it in a pond and the water tasted fine.”

Ended up buying additional pouches (which came with another filter). Filters were easy to clean. This is great for larger group camping where you don’t need to filter water fast. We just got in the habit of filling the bladder at night so we’d have fresh water in the morning, then fill it again so it would filter more throughout the day. Another bit of advice, be sure to store it in a manner so it can thoroughly dry. I ended up 3D printing some hangers, similar to what Camelback used to sell to air out their bladder packs.”

Before the cruise, I followed the instructions for first use. It was messy because I hadn’t tightened one piece well. Once I figured how much to tighten everything, no leaks. My husband chose to drink directly from the straw, but I preferred to squeeze out the water into a container. Very easy. You can hold it upside down and water will drip from the sip part of the straw or you can squeeze to hasten the flow. This is going to go with me on all trips now. Light, takes up little space in my suitcase, and does the job. We aren’t brave enough to try this on dirty water.”

First off, full disclosure: I did not use this product “in the field” as I intend to give it away to an appropriate charitable organization that will have need for it. Personally, I really only use water filters/purifies when I’m backpacking or hiking, and this unit is far too large for that application: it appears to me to be more intended for a more permanent situation, or for a group of people, rather than for individual use.The literature states that it is sub-micron in it’s filtering capacity, so that should be good for pretty much all water-bourne pathogens, and ensuring high quality water.
