Customer Reviews

Customer Review: “This is NOT a review about performance of the item but rather a comment concerning the ITEM DESCRIPTION. THIS IS NOT A GARAGE READY UNIT as advertised by Amazon and Danby. Owners manual that came with my unit clearly states this item is for IN HOUSE USE ONLY and NOT suitable for use in a garage or on an outdoor patio. This has been confirmed by an email to me directly from Danby Customer Service. Hopefully this will be corrected in the item description by Amazon and Danby. If you recently purchased this unit go back to Amazon and get a partial refund on the full purchase price. I did and they were very helpful with the problem.UNIT IN SERVICE REVIEW. The temp. control was a little difficult to get set within the range I wanted. Target was Zero degrees F down to negative -8 degrees F. There were no numbers on the temp control dial. Only a light blue thin line for a high temp setting changing to a dark blue wider line for a lower temp setting. By putting a battery operated remote temp sensor inside the freezer and pairing it with a digital table top display it took me the better part of a day and a half, off and on, to where I could get it set to a fairly consistent range of negative -0.3/-0.2 F high temp to a negative -7.2 F low temp. After monitoring the temp (food in the freezer) with the remote over the course of several days it stayed consistently in that range so I decided to stop making adjustments. Cycle times for the cooling rate have remained consistent. Time to cool (unit running) ranged between 27-38 minutes to go from a high of -0.2/-0.3 to a low of -7.2 F. Idle time (unit off) ranged between 23-24 minutes to go from a negative -7.2 low to a high of negative -0.2/-0.3 F. This has been monitored over a period of 5-6 days with 25-30 lbs. of frozen food in the freezer and at a room temp that varied between 70 and 76 degrees F. Still plenty of space to add more items in the freezer. Two Regrets:The unit is not Energy Star rated but I knew that when I made the purchase. I\’m positive this is going to increase my utility cost but I\’ll live with it.When the unit shuts down at the low set temp (-7.2) the time it takes to get to the high temp setting (-0.2/-0.3) is consistently in the 23-24 minute range. But the time needed to reach the low temp setting (-7.2) from the high temp setting (-0.2/-0.3) increases drastically with only a slight change of a few degrees in the room temp.Had the temp setting been easier to adjust and the unit would have been able to hold the cold temp setting for a longer period of time instead of having to restart the cooling cycle every 23-24 minutes it would get 4 stars.I can\’t speak to how quickly the unit cools down the contents. I believe the manual lists a cooling rate of 8 lbs in 24 hrs. When I first loaded the freezer it was with food already frozen from my refrig freezer unit. Additional room temp items that were added later were placed with an unfrozen item between two previously frozen items “sandwiched” in layers. I did not monitor the time it took to get back to the set temp of negative 7.2 degrees F after loading the unfrozen items.Having said all of that, if you need some additional in-house freezer capacity, the convenience of an upright design and don\’t want to spend a small fortune for full size freezer this is the unit to buy.” – Claude V.

Customer Review: “Petit comme je souhaitais pour l’espace que j’ai et quand même logeable. C’est un bon produit.” – Sylvie G.

Customer Reviews

Customer Review: “I bought this deep freeze as a gift for my daughter in law who is a new mother for her breast milk. It was the perfect size for her laundry room. When the freezer came to temperature, she moved her frozen milk into it. During the night, the freezer stopped working and all the milk thawed. It was such a disappointment, she was so upset that her hard work was gone. I would skip this one and look for a different deep freeze if I were you.” – Amazon Customer

Customer Review: “Although the freezer keeps food frozen it has run up my electric bill way too much. It is definitely not energy efficient. I’m going to stop using it because of it’s energy consumption. Unfortunately I’m past the date to return it. I do not recommend this freezer.” – B. Miller

Customer Reviews

Customer Review: “A 1-2 cuft Freezer was too small for us so this size fit perfectly. I was scared the item was going to arrive dented as I have seen many reviews of other appliances arrive such but the freezer was impressively double boxed keeping it safe. It comes with a 5 year warranty which gave some piece of mind and to double that it was sold directly by Amazon eliminating any headaches with third party sellers.Build quality is up to par and feels nicely constructed and solid.Temperature was a big concern as we bought this for breast milk storage. We bought a commercial thermometer to keep inside to monitor temp. On the coldest setting it goes all the way to -20f which is more than cold enough for almost anything. The freezer is fairly silent with a low hum when the compressor kicks on. Very quiet and even at night it would not bother you.The only downside to the whole thing is there is only one leveling foot. I had to stick a piece of felt underneath one corner to balance it out but this is a very minor fault esp for the price. All and all a good buy, only time will tell.” – Amazon Customer

Customer Review: “We were looking for a small freezer to keep excess frozen foods in our garage. After looking at many stores with no luck, we found this one.. We wanted one with shelves so we could see what was in it instead of a deep chest style. This one was a bit pricey, but it is exactly what we needed. Keeps food frozen even in our hot garage on 90+degree days. Happy with this purchase.” – Amazon Customer

Customer Review: “I bought this mini fridge for my mancave as a temporary solution until I upgrade to a larger refrigerator, and it has been working great. It keeps my beer nice and cold and does exactly what I need it to do without taking up much space. The storage layout is very practical. The two glass shelves and door racks make it easy to organize cans and bottles, and the door storage easily holds taller bottles. For a 1.7 cu ft fridge, it fits more than you’d expect. I also like that the leveling legs make it simple to position exactly where I want it.It’s compact enough to fit perfectly in a small area, and the flat-back design helps it sit flush against the wall. The reversible door is a nice bonus in case you need to adjust it for your room layout. Temperature control is easy with the adjustable thermostat, and it cools down quickly.Another big plus is how quiet it is. At around 37 dB, it runs silently in the background, which is ideal for a mancave, office, or bedroom. The automatic defrost means there’s no maintenance to worry about, and the Energy Star efficiency keeps power usage low.Overall, this ROOMWELL mini fridge is reliable, quiet, energy-efficient, and perfect for keeping drinks cold in a small space. I’m very happy with it and would definitely recommend it for anyone needing a compact, no-freezer refrigerator.” – John D.

Has a handy storage on the inside door for drinks so that freed up the regular section of the fridge for more food etc . As per info received in box only about $30 a year in electric use . Customer Reviews

Customer Review: “Awesome freezer so far. Very quiet, very cold. Easy to adjust, awesome size. For 5 cubic feet it fits very well into small spaces.Cord comes out one side so that did force us to use an extension cord but oh well. Opens nice, good little rack inside, our frozen stuff shows no signs of frostbyte or thawing and refreezing.Perfect for us.” – Anthony W.

Customer Review: “The media could not be loaded. Seems like this unit works really well as far as temperature but the compressor is super loud for mine. It was very damaged around the control panel (right where the compressor is) when it arrived and whenever the control panel turns on, it’s super loud. Is this the case for anyone else? Should I try to get an exchange?EDIT 1/19/16 -This unit works very well and is definitely quiet. If your unit is damaged in shipping like mine was, send that sucker back. If it’s super loud, send it back. Definitely a solid freezer with plenty of room for food!” – Amazon Customer

Complete Buying Guide for Best Garage Ready Chest Freezers

Choosing the right garage ready chest freezer can feel like a big decision, especially with so many options out there. But don’t worry, I’m here to walk you through the key considerations, just like I would for a friend. Finding a freezer that can withstand the unique conditions of a garage is crucial for preserving your food and ensuring your investment lasts.

Essential Factors We Consider

When we evaluate the best garage ready freezers, several critical factors come into play. First and foremost is its “garage ready” certification or capability. This means the freezer is designed to operate efficiently and safely in a wider range of ambient temperatures, typically from 0°F to 110°F (-17°C to 43°C). A regular freezer might struggle or even fail in these fluctuating conditions, leading to food spoilage or appliance breakdown. We also look at capacity; how much space do you need? Consider your family size, bulk buying habits, and how often you plan to use it. Energy efficiency is another big one. Even if a freezer costs less upfront, high running costs can quickly negate those savings. Look for Energy Star ratings where applicable, or at least a model known for efficient operation. Finally, think about the type: chest freezers typically offer more storage volume and are often more energy-efficient due to their top-opening lid, which keeps cold air from escaping easily. However, upright freezers offer better organization with shelves and baskets, making it easier to find items quickly, albeit often at the cost of some capacity and potentially slightly higher energy use.

Budget Planning

Setting a budget for your new garage freezer is smart. Prices can vary significantly based on size, features, and brand. Smaller, more basic models might start around $200-$300, while larger, feature-rich units can go upwards of $700-$1000. Remember to factor in potential long-term costs like electricity consumption. A slightly more expensive, energy-efficient model might save you money in the long run. Also, consider any accessories you might need, like those handy freezer organizer bins, which are invaluable for chest freezers. Don’t forget delivery and installation costs if you’re not planning to move it yourself. Sometimes, a great deal on a freezer can pop up, but you still need to be aware of the total cost of ownership.

Final Thoughts

Ultimately, choosing the best garage ready chest freezer comes down to your specific needs and priorities. Whether you need a compact model for occasional overflow or a large capacity unit for bulk storage, prioritizing garage-ready features will save you headaches and money. Think about how you’ll use the freezer, the typical temperatures in your garage, and your budget. Reading customer reviews, especially those detailing performance in varying conditions, can offer real-world insights that specifications alone might miss. A reliable garage freezer is a fantastic addition to any home, providing convenience and flexibility for your food storage needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What does “garage ready” mean for a freezer?

A: A freezer designated as “garage ready” means it’s specifically engineered to operate efficiently and safely in a wider range of ambient temperatures than a standard home freezer. This typically includes temperatures from as low as 0°F (-17°C) up to 110°F (43°C). Regular freezers are usually designed for indoor, more stable temperatures (e.g., 60°F to 80°F) and can struggle, consume excessive energy, or even fail when exposed to extreme heat or cold in a garage.

Q: Is a chest freezer or an upright freezer better for a garage?

A: Both have their advantages! Chest freezers are often more energy-efficient because cold air sinks, so less escapes when you open the top lid. They also tend to have larger usable capacity for their footprint and can be more affordable. However, organizing items can be challenging without baskets. Upright freezers offer better organization with shelves, making it easier to find items quickly, but they can be less energy-efficient as cold air rushes out when the door is opened. For a garage, choose based on your preference for organization vs. maximum capacity/efficiency and ensure it’s explicitly “garage ready.”

Q: How can I improve the energy efficiency of my garage freezer?

A: Several steps can help! First, ensure the freezer is placed in a well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight or heat sources like a water heater. Don’t overcrowd the freezer; keeping it mostly full helps it retain cold, but allow for some air circulation. Regularly defrost manual defrost models to prevent ice buildup, which reduces efficiency. Check door seals for any leaks, and keep the coils clean. Lastly, consider the ambient temperature; a “garage ready” freezer will naturally perform better in extreme conditions.

Q: What size garage freezer do I need?

A: This depends on your household size and storage habits. A general rule of thumb is 1.5 to 2 cubic feet of freezer space per person. So, a family of four might look for something in the 6-8 cubic feet range. If you buy in bulk, hunt, or garden extensively, you might need more. Measure your available garage space carefully before purchasing, considering both width and depth, as well as clearance for opening the lid or door.

Choosing the right garage ready chest freezer is all about empowering your home with more storage and flexibility. We hope this guide has cleared up any confusion and given you the confidence to pick the perfect model for your needs. Whether you’re stocking up on deals, preserving garden produce, or simply needing extra space, a reliable garage freezer is an invaluable addition. So go ahead, find your ideal freezer, and enjoy the convenience of expanded frozen storage!
