Customer Reviews

Customer Review: “A very good all around glass for almost any wine, whether red or white, including sparkling wine. Not that this means that some other Riedel Sommeliers glass will not outperform it in side by side comparison. Certainly, dramatically better than the Zalto, in whatever variation that one chooses and at half the Zaltos’s cost. Works extremely well for New World Pinot Noir even in side by side comparisons with the Riedel Sommeliers Burgundy glass that is almost 4X the cost per glass. And for New World Pinot Noir outperforms the Sommeliers Burgundy. Hard, if not impossible, to fault the Riedel Veritas New World Pinot Noir Glass. Very elegant, thin rim, light, and relatively speaking large volume capacity for the same wine Sommeliers. Not that anyone should try to use any wine glass to its full volume capacity. Of course, it is “fragile.” But that comes with the territory and if one is not comfortable with that, than don’t buy this glass. Riedel has certainly refined their manufacturing technique because the Veritas glasses for a given wine actually hold more volume than the Sommeliers for the same wine, except for the Bordeaux and Burgundy glasses. And the rim can’t be more than a 0.1mm thicker than the Sommeliers Burgundy glass, if that.”

Customer Review: “We were first introduced to these glasses on a wine tour in Oregon. All the wineries use them. They are perfect for New World Pinots, enhancing the bouquet and taste of the wine. However, the stems are very thin and fragile. Use extra care while washing and drying. Also, the price fluctuation is crazy on these glasses. I’ve seen them as low as $49 and as high as $75 on Amazon since September.”

Customer Reviews

Customer Review: “Beautiful glasses. I found these after reading a bon appetit recommendation in their wine section of the Bev edition. I coincidentally just broke #3 of 4 of my beautiful CB2 red wine glasses. I think I’m in need of a more durable glass lol. I love how there’s 6 in a set, plenty for your everyday or for hosting. The size is modest but versatile for red or for white. They feel hearty without feeling or looking like the wine glass they have at that wood fired pizza place down the street. They feel elegant and they’re enjoyable to drink out of and to hold. I hand washed them to start just in case they all were to break at once — I’d be devastated!I love the angle in their design, makes them feel modern and consider. Very cool that such a durable choice has this design detail.I did find on the official website for the brand they have detailed instructions on what settings need to be used on the washer from placement to temperature. A little annoying that wasn’t on the box or in the Amazon description. Give it a look before you hit go. Otherwise incredibly happy with this purchase. None of mine arrived broken. They were in a box that was wrapped in bubble wrap and then in another box and they did great. Shipped directly from the brand.”

Customer Review: “My husband bought these for me for Christmas. I’m generally a bull in a china shop with my wine glasses and was hoping these would not break as easily. So far so good! And the shape is very pretty! I’ve washed them in the dishwasher and no breakage so far.”

Customer Review: “Shipped well packed. Not a scratch. Very even thin glass with great ring tone. Crystal clear with no distortions. Smooth drinking edges and NO seams detectable between bowl and stem and stem and base (Always a sign of cheaply made wine glasses). Manufacturer has inconspicuously etched name on the base and you can rest assured these are quality glasses that will impress your oenophile guests.”

Customer Reviews

Customer Review: “Is Riedel “O” a worthy alternative to Vinum? Is the “OO” tumbler different from the “O”?Most of use could agree it would be great to have more of the “Big O” in our lives. Great wine just might be the next best thing. Although this listing is for the “O” tumbler, it appears identical to the “OO” series in every way. I ordered these to match a broken glass, so it’s easy to make a direction comparison of these excellent vessels. Read on to learn if these less expensive Riedel glasses are worth considering for half the price of the legendary Vinum:If you love good wine you know that Riedel’s Vinum collection is the gold standard of wine crystal. When we were married nearly two decades ago we were blessed with Riedel Vinum glasses in red wine, white wine and champagne styles. We have only broken a few over the years and our friends and relatives were so generous we still have some stems that have never been used with the famous Riedel sticker still in place.First, these are excellent glasses. Although machined, let’s not be wine snobs about it. Although are Vinums are technically Cabernet Sauvignon glasses, any of the red wine Riedel glasses do marvelously whether you are pouring Syrah, Pinot, Cabernet or even other more exotic red grapes. This “Syrah” design is more tapered in at the top because a 1990s a taste test among experts revealed that the aroma of Syrah/Shiraz can be best gathered with this shape, theoretically enhancing flavor, too.I had been jealous of the wine tumbler design since Riedel first introduced it in 2004. I was glad to see these at a terrific price of about $13 a stem in 2020 and now just about $11. After carefully comparing the glasses to the Vinum I recommend them highly although we prefer to hand wash and would not use the dishwasher. Here are some differences:The Riedel O Collection still makes a beautifully chirpy and musical “clink” sound. It’s satisfying when making a toast yet the resonance and musicality does not linger as expressively as the Vinum. Also, if you do get the Tumblers, due to the very nature of these being stemless, the still clink but not as beautifully as a stemmed crystal wine glass. They are thin and beautiful—a true pleasure to drink from.Three years after my review of the identical “OO” tumbler, that Riedel collection is still not in their master catalog which can be downloaded online. My guess is that each collection retains a slightly different name for marketing sales channel purposes only. For example, this “O” version was first introduced as an exclusive to Williams Sonoma. Now, that’s enough tedium! It’s time for my wife and I to go “tumble” with these “tumblers” and a great vino. We share A TOAST TO YOU AND YOURS for prosperity, health and great days ahead! CHEERS!!!”

Customer Review: “I really enjoy these glasses, and not just because of their interesting and classy appearance! They are quite thin (esp the rims) and feel delicate, yet at the same time feel surprisingly well balanced in the hand. In my opinion, they have proved themselves to be very durable, especially for such a thin glass (see my dishwasher testimony to follow!). The shape enables the consumer to really enjoy the nose of the wine.I bought a large quantity of the cab/merlot glasses for a party we were having with a large amount of wine. They were an absolute hit all the way from the casual wine drinkers to several true wine conoisseurs present. Everyone loved the stemless presentation (and they were so popular that they drank both whites and reds out of them). Little did they know I had only paid $8 a glass! Someone commented that they had just read a NYT article on these, so they will probably be a hot item this ’04 holiday season.Even better… I was hesitant to put them through the dishwasher due to the rim thinness which I interpreted as a higher risk to break. However, given the number of glasses we had to wash, we went ahead and put them through the dishwasher after the party (some even on the bottom rack without my knowledge!). I figured with the number we had to wash we may lose a few but same some time.. Much to my surprise, not a single one of them broke – they came out beautifully. The dishwasher is an old one too, so I also expected them to be at a higher risk for breakage due to the rougher nature of older dishwashers!I do not think that hand warming is really going to be a problem with the stems in absentia – most of the time you just pick the glass up for a moment to appreciate a sip. Also, the bowls are so large that you can easily (and comfortably) hold them more towards the top of the glass where the wine isn’t sitting – I have done this myself when I have walked around the house or the party with my glass. (In general you are only going to have wine in the bottom of the bowl anyway!)In addition, for those who prefer to avoid leaded crystal due to concerns of lead leeching into the wine, these glasses are an excellent option as they are made of glass instead of leaded crystal!”

Complete Buying Guide for Best Pinot Noir Glasses

Choosing the perfect Pinot Noir glasses can feel a bit overwhelming with so many options available. But trust me, finding the right one will truly transform your wine-drinking ritual. Let’s break down what matters most so you can confidently pick glasses that make your Pinot Noir sing.

Essential Factors We Consider

When we test and recommend Pinot Noir glasses, we look at several key elements. First and foremost is the bowl shape. A classic Burgundy or Pinot Noir glass will have a wide bowl that tapers at the top. This shape is crucial for concentrating the delicate, complex aromas of Pinot Noir, allowing them to gather at the rim for your nose to discover. The wider surface area also helps the wine breathe, softening tannins and enhancing flavors. We also pay close attention to the rim thickness. A thin, finely cut rim allows the wine to flow smoothly onto your palate without obstruction, minimizing interference between your lips and the wine itself. This subtle detail significantly impacts the tasting experience. Finally, the material is vital. Most high-quality Pinot Noir glasses are made from crystal, either leaded or lead-free. Crystal offers superior clarity, allowing you to appreciate the wine’s beautiful color, and it often has a pleasing weight and resonance. Lead-free crystal, specifically, gives you all the benefits without any concerns about lead content, making them some of the best non toxic drinking glasses available.

Budget Planning

When it comes to Pinot Noir glasses, you’ll find options spanning a wide price range. Entry-level glasses might cost around $20-$30 for a set, offering a good introduction to varietal-specific shapes without a huge investment. Mid-range options, often from reputable brands like Riedel’s Vinum or Extreme lines, can range from $40-$80 per set, providing excellent quality and performance for the price. For the ultimate connoisseur, high-end, hand-blown crystal glasses can easily exceed $100 per glass, delivering unparalleled craftsmanship and a truly luxurious feel. Consider how often you’ll use them and for what occasions. If you’re an everyday wine drinker, a more durable, dishwasher-safe option might be preferable, even if it’s not the absolute thinnest crystal. If you occasionally host dinner parties, having a set of four or six is usually sufficient. Remember, a higher price doesn’t always guarantee the “best” experience for you; it’s about finding the sweet spot between quality, budget, and personal preference.

Final Thoughts

Ultimately, choosing the best Pinot Noir glasses is a personal journey. The right glass shouldn’t just look good; it should actively enhance your enjoyment of the wine. Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why do I need a specific glass for Pinot Noir?

A: Pinot Noir is a delicate and aromatic wine with complex flavors like cherry, raspberry, forest floor, and spice. A dedicated Pinot Noir glass (often called a Burgundy glass) has a wide bowl and a narrower rim. This design allows the wine to breathe and release its subtle aromas, while the tapered rim concentrates those aromas for your nose and guides the wine to the right part of your palate, enhancing the delicate fruit and earthy notes.

Q: Can I use a regular red wine glass for Pinot Noir?

A: While you can, using a generic red wine glass won’t offer the same optimal experience. General red wine glasses often have a taller, narrower bowl more suited for bolder wines like Cabernet Sauvignon. A specific Pinot Noir glass is designed to highlight the unique, nuanced characteristics of this lighter-bodied red, allowing its true potential to shine through.

Q: Are crystal glasses always better than regular glass for Pinot Noir?

A: Crystal glasses, especially high-quality lead-free crystal, offer several advantages for Pinot Noir. They typically have a thinner rim and a clearer, more brilliant appearance, which enhances the visual and tactile experience. The non-porous nature of crystal can also prevent flavors from clinging to the glass. While regular glass can still be enjoyable, crystal usually provides a superior sensory experience.

Q: How should I clean my Pinot Noir glasses?

A: Many modern Pinot Noir glasses, particularly those made from Tritan crystal, are dishwasher safe (check manufacturer instructions). For more delicate crystal or if you prefer, hand washing with warm water and a mild, unscented soap is best. Use a soft sponge or cloth, and for sparkling results, consider using two lint-free towels to dry. If you have particularly delicate stemware, a small ultrasonic cleaner can be a gentle option for thorough cleaning, although this is more common for jewelry.

Q: What’s the difference between “New World” and “Old World” Pinot Noir glasses?

A: Some brands, like Riedel, design glasses specifically for “New World” versus “Old World” wines. A New World Pinot Noir glass typically has a slightly larger bowl to accommodate the often fruitier, bolder characteristics of wines from regions like California or Oregon. An “Old World” Burgundy glass might have a slightly narrower opening to better capture the earthy, more subtle aromatics found in traditional French Burgundies. It’s a subtle distinction that passionate wine lovers appreciate.

There you have it, our comprehensive guide to finding the best Pinot Noir glasses! We truly hope this list helps you select the perfect glassware to enhance your wine journey. Remember, the right glass can elevate every sip, unlocking hidden aromas and flavors you might otherwise miss. Whether you opt for a classic crystal design or a more modern, durable option, investing in quality Pinot Noir glasses is a decision your palate will thank you for. So go ahead, find your favorite, and prepare to savor your next bottle of Pinot like never before. Cheers to many delightful wine moments!
