Customer Reviews
Customer Review: “I bought this because I don’t have a barbecue and also because I love grilled cheese sandwiches done on a stove top grill like this. It’s fantastic! It is non-stick, heats perfectly, grills perfectly and clean up is a snap! It’s well made – so much so, that I purchased one for each of my Sons! I highly recommend!!”
Customer Review: “This pan has the word premium written all over it – the pan itself, the lid, the handle, the silicone tongs, and even the included Phillips screwdriver! I can’t praise the handle enough; it looks beautiful, feels smooth in the hand, and does an excellent job shielding against heat. I’ve used it to grill lamb and pork, and to fry dumplings. In fact, it’s an excellent pan for dumplings: the griddle on the bottom allows water to reach underneath, helping them cook evenly. The square shape also makes it much easier to arrange dumplings neatly compared to a round pan. That said, it’s probably not ideal for frying eggs. I tried it once, and it got a bit messy.”

Customer Reviews
Customer Review: “After reading some recipes that talked about smoking some meat in a smoker using a baking pan like this I decided to try this out. The rack sits in the pan and lifts up whatever you are cooking so the smoke can cover everything. It also keeps the drippings right in the pan under the rack. Did all of that and worked well. Nice to just bring the pan in from the smoker and pour off the drippings to use for gravy, etc. It keeps the bottom of the smoker cleaner – and it’s nicer to just have to clean this rack and pan instead of cleaning off the racks of my smoker. Smoke still coats the rack and pan. But it cleans off pretty easily – easier than cleaning the racks in my smoker, probably due to the non-stick coating. I’ll be using this tray for most of the food I smoke now. Edit- I absolutely love these. I started using one of the pans for my oven. The idea of having to bake a vegetable (or anything else) and flip over mid cooking makes me cringe. I line the tray with parchment paper. Use the rack and slice squash, cube eggplant with partial skin left on, slice up bell peppers, asparagus – just about any vegetable you can bake. Usually I do 450 degrees for 30 minutes or so to get a char on the vegetables. Come out amazing every time with none of the nonsense of “flipping” something over. Just toss in your desired oil and seasoning if wanted. This has been used on average probably 6 days a week for close to a year. Dishwasher’d (just the rack) a few times, let soak in hot water a bunch – maybe that wasnt great as the non-stick worked well and I was just lazy. But the coating on the rack is going away and seeing some rust. Just bought another pan and will be more careful cleaning it. Lost 40 pounds exercising and eating better and this pan definitely helped by making veggies easier and better when not just eating them raw.”
Customer Review: “I absolutely love this pan! We use on a regular basis for bacon, fried fish, and chicken tenders. I originally purchased as a pan to make homemade chicken nuggets. Pan/rack I was using was not good enough. I love this rack in this pan is raised and suits my needs perfectly. Very sturdy, lightweight, holds enough for our family, and was a very good deal. We fix homemade pizzas at least 3 times a month. We will try using for pizza next. Right now my daughter puts pizzas directly on racks in oven which causes baked ingredients stuck and cooked in oven. Definitely need to try for pizza. BTW I neglected to mention how easy this pan is to clean up. Non stick coating makes it very easy to clean. You can use a napkin to wipe clean, it is that easy.”

Customer Reviews
Customer Review: “LOVE this pan. My husband is a chef and he had basically killed our old grill pan from so much use. The new pan is amazing and much easier to clean than the old one.”
Customer Review: “I have wanted this pan for a long time. The pan I had was a round cast iron one that was difficult to clean and always set the smoke alarm and had a small cooking surface. This all clad pan solved all of those issues. The pan is square so it accommodates multiple pieces of chicken or steak. I can, and did, use it for kebabs. It was easy to clean and cooled off quickly. My mom laughed and said that it was the first time I grilled inside when someone didn’t have to take down the smoke alarm and close it up in the bathroom. The steaks I cooked were juicy with a nice bark from the rub I used. The kebabs were easy to turn and also tasted delicious. I grilled some eggplant and zucchini one night and it too was tasty and not dried out, which was an issue with the cast iron. I will mention one more thing. I went to the mall to Williams Sonoma AND to Macy’s looking for this pan. They both supposedly carried it and actually neither had it in the store. I wasted hours and gas making this trip. When I got home I ordered it from Amazon and it arrived two later. Thanks Amazon.”

Complete Buying Guide for Best Pan To Cook A Steak In
Choosing the best pan to cook a steak in can feel overwhelming with all the options available. But don’t worry, I’m here to break down what truly matters. Think of it like picking the right tool for a specific job; a great steak needs the right environment to truly shine.
Essential Factors We Consider
When we evaluate a steak pan, we look at several key elements that directly impact your cooking experience and the final taste of your steak:
- Material: This is arguably the most crucial factor.
- Cast Iron: The king of searing! It heats slowly but retains heat exceptionally well and evenly. This consistent, high heat is what creates that beautiful crust. It does require seasoning and specific care.
- Hard-Anodized Aluminum: Offers good heat conductivity and is often paired with a durable non-stick coating. Lighter than cast iron but still sturdy.
- Carbon Steel: A lighter alternative to cast iron with similar heat properties. It also requires seasoning and develops a natural non-stick surface over time.
- Stainless Steel: While versatile, a plain stainless steel pan might not be the absolute best for searing steak as it can have hotspots. However, multi-ply stainless steel with an aluminum core performs much better.
- Heat Distribution & Retention: For steak, you want a pan that heats evenly across its surface and, more importantly, holds that heat consistently when the cold steak hits it. This prevents temperature drops and ensures a uniform sear.
- Non-Stick Properties: Some pans, like those with granite or ceramic coatings, offer excellent food release, making cooking and cleanup a breeze. Cast iron and carbon steel develop natural non-stick properties over time with proper seasoning.
- Ridges vs. Flat Surface: Grill pans have raised ridges that create classic grill marks and allow fat to drain away. Flat-bottomed skillets give you a full crust (think Maillard reaction) across the entire steak. Both have their merits.
- Size and Shape: A square pan often offers more usable cooking surface than a round one of the same diameter. Consider how many steaks you typically cook at once.
- Handle Design: Look for sturdy, ergonomic handles that stay cool on the stovetop. If you plan to finish your steak in the oven, ensure the handle is oven-safe (and check its temperature limit!).
- Compatibility: Will it work on your stovetop? Gas, electric, glass-top, induction cooktop – always check for compatibility. Many pans are also oven-safe, which is a big plus for finishing thicker steaks.
- Lid: A lid can be helpful for splatter control or for finishing thicker cuts in the oven, trapping steam to help cook the interior gently after a hard sear.
Budget Planning
When it comes to the best pan to cook a steak in, prices can vary quite a bit. You’ll find excellent options across different price points, and often, the investment reflects the material, brand reputation, and added features.
- Budget-Friendly ($20-$50): In this range, you’ll primarily find good quality non-stick aluminum grill pans or basic pre-seasoned cast iron options. They’re great for beginners or those who don’t cook steak daily but want a reliable pan.
- Mid-Range ($50-$100): Here, you’ll see more robust non-stick coatings, heavier-gauge aluminum or carbon steel pans, and well-known cast iron brands like Lodge. These often offer better durability and more consistent performance.
- Premium ($100+): This category includes high-end hard-anodized non-stick pans (like All-Clad), specialty multi-clad stainless steel pans, or designer cast iron. These are built for longevity, superior heat management, and often come with extended warranties.
Remember, a higher price doesn’t always guarantee the “best” pan for *your* specific needs. Consider how often you’ll use it and what features are most important to you before deciding how much to spend.
Final Thoughts
Ultimately, the best pan to cook a steak in is one that you’ll love using and that gives you the results you crave. Whether you prioritize the unmatched sear of cast iron, the easy cleanup of a non-stick surface, or a balance of both, there’s a perfect pan out there. Don’t be afraid to try different materials or styles until you find your kitchen soulmate!
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is the best material for a steak pan?
A: For searing steak, cast iron is widely considered the best material due to its exceptional heat retention and ability to reach very high temperatures, which creates a fantastic crust. However, heavy-gauge hard-anodized aluminum with a quality non-stick coating or carbon steel pans also perform very well, offering a good balance of heat and convenience.
Q: Can I cook a steak in a regular frying pan?
A: Yes, you absolutely can! A heavy-bottomed stainless steel skillet or a regular cast iron skillet (without ridges) can achieve a superb sear on a steak. The key is to get the pan screaming hot and ensure it has good mass to retain that heat when the steak is added. While it won’t give you grill marks, you’ll get a more uniform, delicious crust.
Q: How do I get good grill marks on my steak indoors?
A: To get those coveted grill marks, you need a grill pan with distinct ridges. Preheat the pan to a very high temperature (it should be smoking lightly). Lightly oil your steak, not the pan. Place the steak on the hot ridges and press down gently. Don’t move it for 2-3 minutes. For crosshatch marks, rotate the steak 90 degrees and cook for another 2-3 minutes before flipping and repeating on the other side.
Q: How do I clean a cast iron steak pan?
A: Cleaning a cast iron steak pan involves a few simple steps to maintain its seasoning. After cooking, scrape off any food residue with a spatula or pan scraper. Hand wash the pan with hot water and a stiff brush or non-abrasive sponge. Avoid harsh soaps if possible, though a little mild soap is fine if rinsed thoroughly. Dry the pan immediately and completely on the stovetop over low heat. Once dry, apply a very thin layer of cooking oil (like vegetable or grapeseed oil) to the interior surface with a paper towel, then wipe off any excess. This keeps it seasoned and prevents rust.
Q: Are non-stick grill pans safe for high heat?
A: Most modern non-stick coatings are safe for medium-high heat, generally up to 400-500°F (200-260°C). However, extreme high heat can cause the coating to degrade, release fumes, and lose its non-stick properties over time. Always check the manufacturer’s specific temperature recommendations for your pan. For searing at very high temperatures, bare cast iron or carbon steel might be a more durable and safer choice.
