Customer Review: “I am a pretty serious coffee snob – I have a lot of coffee making apparatus (pour over, chemex) and an elaborate espresso machine setup, as well as multiple grinders. I never thought I would actually own an automatic coffee machine but when it came time to buy one I asked my coffee geek friends and they consistently recommended the Bonavita as one of the top choices. It was also the most affordable among the choices they recommended (the others being the Technivorm Moccamaster, the Ratio Eight, Ratio Six, and various others). That said it costs more than many other mainstream brand coffee makers.But here’s the thing – this machine works like a charm, and it does exactly what a good coffee maker should. It heats the water up to the right temperature, pre-infuses (if you turn that mode on which I do), and evenly distributes the water to saturate the coffee grounds, and extract a delicious pot of coffee. It’s quick, easy, and makes consistently flavorful coffee.The thermal carafe keeps the coffee hot for a long time, I’ve had no issues with that at all – but as others have pointed out you do need to put the lid on right after the pot is done brewing because you cannot brew with the lid on, and obviously heat escapes quickly without the lid on. Others have complained about pouring with the lid off, and even some complain about pouring with the lid on. I haven’t found either to be an issue, you just have to sort of get the hang of it.I’ve made dark and light roasts with different grinds (coarser and finer) and been quite happy with the results. When I would go to measure out the coffee for the morning brew, I would just eyeball it and make coffee. Coffee was coffee, right?A few weeks ago the coffee maker I didn’t think much about because it did its job decided to stop working. It could have been sabotaged by my girlfriend who “cleaned” it, but dead none the less. Like with any appliance or object that needs to be replaced, I over-analyzed it and started looking into different coffee makers. I wanted a good one because I drink coffee every day and to me, it’s worth the investment to find something that makes great coffee and has received favorable reviews.In my research of a day or so, I discovered there was this organization called the Specialty Coffee Association. They have criteria on what it takes to make a great cup of coffee. Those criteria are then used to review coffee makers. Bonavita Connoisseur (BV1901TS) meets that criteria and it shows up in the quality of the coffee.It’s a great simple coffee maker that makes great coffee. I followed the instructions and measured out my coffee of freshly ground coffee. Basically, it’s 2 tbsp of coffee per cup. If you have 8 cups, you need 16 tbsp or 1 even cup of ground coffee. Also used filtered water because the coffee really is the sum of all the ingredients and you can’t cut corners on water. I did hold down the button for the power to turn on Pre-Infusion. The results leave you with a really clean, flavorful cup of coffee where I immediately tasted a huge difference. There was no bitterness. Another thing I make sure of, that it wasn’t heating the coffee after it was done and instead it put the contents into a thermal carafe. This makes a huge difference if you’re coming back to the pot for more coffee. It keeps the coffee pretty warm for a long while and allows you to have the same quality coffee you did when you made it. I’ve had experiences with my other coffee maker where subsequent cups tasted horribly after being cooked on a burner. The thermal carafe was something I didn’t know I needed until I tried it.So what’s the purpose of the review? Are you apprehensive about buying a coffee maker at $150 bucks and not sure about that type of investment? I think you can rest assured that this is a solid purchase as it makes a cup of coffee at a high level if all your looking for is a simple coffee maker. It doesn’t have all the extra bells and whistles another coffee maker could possibly have. For me, I didn’t need my coffee maker on my Wi-Fi or be able to do multiple jobs to earn its place in my kitchen. I just needed it to do its job at a high level and it does that. I have been drinking specialty coffee for years, have all the equipment, used to roast my own beans, blah blah. I have pourovers, vacuum brewers, and French presses. My go-to brewing method has always been French press. But I was always a bit envious of my son-in-law’s Technovorm, which makes a great cup of coffee. I finally decided to break down and get a Technivorm, but when I checked the price I learned that it has gone up by nearly $100. So, I came across this device, and bought it. Here is my review:Coffee quality is excellent, as good as the Technovorm, in my view. One of the criticisms is that this brewer is not SCAA sanctioned, and this concerned me because I was afraid that the brew temperature would be inadequate. Not so. This brewer gets to 200 deg. F. Great cup of coffee.An advantage of this brewer, for me, is that I can make a small pot with no loss of brew quality. I can made 12, 18 or 24 ounce pots and all are great. A lot of times I want just one cup, and because I can make a great 12 ounce pot, I don’t waste beans.One complaint I read was that it is confusing to put the brewer into the special, pre-infusion mode. I found this claim to be false. With the machine off, you hold the switch down for five seconds. Now you are in special mode (which I haven’t used much), and you stay there until you exit the mode (another five second push) or until you unplug the machine. Nothing could be simpler. In fact the entire operation of the machine is simple, an advantage.Another complaint was poor quality. To me, this device is no better or worse, quality wise, than the Technovorm. Yes it’s light weight and has a lot of plastic. So does the Technovorm. This is a good looking machine that will not embarrass you counter top.Another complaint was about how the carafe pours. I think this complaint is fair. The carafe is hard to empty completely and does a poor job of pouring unless the top has been installed. My solution is to use the top whenever I pour. It takes five seconds or less to install (it has a one-turn thread).A final complaint is that there is no warming plate and that the carafe dies not keep the coffee warm long enough. Well, no and yes. No, coffee should never be kept warm on a burner because it creates bitterness, and it does this very rapidly – don’t do it, better to microwave it, if needed. Customer Review: “I got this on an “open box” deal for $66, and for that price it’s impossible to beat. For the list price it’s still quite good but possibly more difficult to justify. I would say for what I paid, it’s a five star product. For the over $100 list price, it’s closer to four stars. Read on for my detailed thoughts.I’ve worked at a few coffee shops, done cuppings with roasters, tried many different brewing techniques, roasted my own beans, etc, so I’ve definitely tried plenty of good coffee. This coffee is good. When you pay more for a drip machine, you’re essentially buying consistency — water temperature, volume, brew time, where the water is distributed over the grounds, all of these things matter, and make a difference in the flavors that end up in your cup. So while a $10 walmart dripper just indiscriminately dumps some moderately hot water over your precious coffee, a more expensive maker will control these variables with greater and greater precision. It’s possible a moccamaster is more precise, but I don’t have experience with one. I can say that the coffee the bonavita produces compares favorably with the extremely expensive, top of the line fetco machines (with proprietary spinning showerhead drippers and all the other bells and whistles) we had at the last coffee shop I worked at. I’ve changed cities since I worked there, so it’s difficult to compare apples to apples, since I don’t have access to the same beans, but using fairly middle of the road beans I’ve gotten pleasing results. It’s not as good as the godly-est pourovers I’ve ever had, but it’s fairly consistently quite good, doesn’t require you to stare lovingly at your hario for 10 minutes, and can brew several cups at once, unlike an aeropress. Changing the volume of beans used and the fineness of the grind yield relatively predictable results, which is a wonderful encouragement for experimentation in search of your personal perfect recipe.To address some of the common complaints:I find the coffee plenty hot when the machine is finished brewing. It’s very important to preheat everything before you start brewing, especially since it’s a comparatively small volume of hot coffee. I run a two or three cup “blank pot” through the machine to rinse the filter and heat everything up before I brew.It’s true, the pot does not keep the coffee hot all day, however I have to say it’s just a little ridiculous to expect it to. It’s a relatively small volume of liquid (less liquid=less heat retention) in a pot that has a fairly large surface area, including that big, plastic, heat sucking lid. This is part of the reason for the tall, skinny design of the moccamaster, to minimize the surface area of the lid. I’ve found the bonavita carafe keeps my coffee reasonably hot for a couple hours, which is plenty for me. It might not be the world’s best thermal pot but it’s also not terrible, and the wider lid makes it easier to clean. For what I paid it’s fine.It’s got a few plastic parts but what coffee maker for around $100 or less doesn’t?I don’t know if they changed the design of the carafe since the previous reviewers bought theirs, but I don’t experience the problems they’ve had with pouring without the lid. I wouldn’t call it a great pouring experience but it also doesn’t make a huge mess as others have complained. It definitely pours better with the lid but if I pour a cup without I don’t have any problem. Maybe a drip or two but nothing out of the ordinary. That being said, the complaint about there always beings about a tablespoon of liquid remaining in the carafe is totally true. It doesn’t make me crazy, but it is kind of mystifying how I can leave the thing upside down for hours, come back, and there’s still a tablespoon of water rolling around in there. I don’t think the volume of liquid is enough to affect the quality of the coffee, and if you wanted to you could just dry it out with a towel, but it is a very strange design problem.Bonavita offers a double walled glass carafe replacement that looks beautiful and is probably better than the stock one on most counts, but is rather expensive given the cost of the machine itself.Overall, if you want something approaching consistency and quality from a drip brewer, this is a good choice. Maybe not the world’s best, but also not the most expensive. Since I got it for 66, I’m quite happy. But if I had bought it for list price, I might have felt like I would rather have saved some money and just worked on my chemex technique. So at 66, five stars, over 100, four stars.”

I had gone though several of the under $100 dollar popular makers and the coffee was pretty much standard issue, regardless of all the comments and claims.I broke down and purchased a very nice French Press, as I had coffee from these and was very pleased. When it came – I then began the research of “all of the work” required to get the press coffee just right – bottom line – “No Way” I do not have this type of time in the morning just to get a decent cup of coffee !Enter this fantastic and simple product!Yes, it requires a little more work than just pressing the button on standard coffee-maker – but the little extra work is very well worth the effort!The supplied micro-mesh stainless reusable filter is beautiful, but I add a non-bleached cone filter – I like finely ground fresh coffee.Using an electric kettle, it is both easy and rewarding to irrigate the grounds and see what your doing – no way an electric automatic coffee-maker can do this. Customer Review: “We have had this exact Cuisinart 14-cup coffee maker for nearly 6 years. The heat plate will usually get a bit rusty after several years but this is a solid large capacity coffee maker that consistently make great coffee. After nearly 6 years the old unit began leaking a little. I though it was just a spill but ends up it was leaking. I purchased this same coffeemaker because it has been a good machine for our needs. I have read about people having issues with the lid but fortunately we are intelligent enough to actually put the lid on properly. It actually just snaps on – Easy-peesey! We have never had any issues with the carafe leaking or pouring badly. Our has always managed to pour as expected. I find this to be a good quality machine and enjoy that I can adjust strengths and cup sizes if I choose.UPDATE: After 2 days of making coffee I can say we’ll be looking for a replacement carafe under warranty as this one has the issue of pouring badly that so many have complained about. For now – We are using the old carafe we have on hand.”

Coffee is no exception.However, this coffee maker meets the perfect mix of value and performance. I make 750mL a day, which comes to be 5 cups on this machine. I keep it turned on.Blooming – This alters the brew cycle to pour some water over the grounds… pause for a while, then brews the rest of the pot. I’m undecided on this feature, but my girlfriend prefers it.Use and cleanup is easy.1. Pour water into the water reservoir (max 1250mL) Tip: I use a pitcher that only ever contains clean water for this. Instead of using the carafe like is common. This helps everything stay cleaner, longer.2. Add beans into a cone filter. Put that filter in the container.3. Turn it on. Wait a bit. Drink Coffee4. Customer Review: “I have made coffee with the Krups coffee maker for the past 7 mornings. Over the past decade, I’ve relied on a French Press and have always ground my own coffee beans. It took a while to figure out the right proportions, especially since I needed to use a finer grind. I’ve finally adapted to the Krups. The coffee maker looks good and fits well on the counter. It is compact and doesn’t overwhelm the area. This is my routine: I use 40 grams of quality (Peet’s) whole bean coffee which I grind on a medium setting. I fill the carafe with 48 ounces of water (1420ml) which I weigh (1360 gm) so I can have a consistent tasting cup of coffee every morning. It took several days to get the proportions correct. Using a French Press required more coffee beans to achieve the desired strength. (Forty-eight ounces of water brings the top past the maximum line and just to the bottom of the little hole in the water tank. I had no problem with this at all.) If you are a coffee enthusiast, and taste and consistency matter to you, it is important to use premium coffee beans that you grind immediately before use, fresh cold water and the same proportions each time (adjusted to your taste.) There is no more fine silt at the bottom of my cup that you get with a French Press. The coffee brews fast, though I haven’t tried the ½ anti-drip function that makes a slower, stronger pot. I find the strength with no anti-drip to be just fine. Having coffee with the perfect strength matters to me—it shouldn’t be overpowering, but it also can’t be watery or too weak. The coffee is rich and robust, and I think the Krups machine enhances its flavor well. I have used the “blooming button” each time because I was intrigued by the “extra fullness and character” that the instruction booklet claims the blooming provides. The concept of releasing some water to soak the beans and then continuing the brewing process seemed to make sense. You can try both ways and see if there is a difference. Clean-up is quick. You just slide out the filter holder containing the grinds and dump them. Then wash the carafe. For me, there is a negative with this coffee maker. When I read 8-cup coffee maker I thought 8 American cups where a cup is usually a mug or at the very least, 8 oz. Not the case with this coffee maker. We are two people. Between us, we drink at least two full mugs of coffee each morning. One carafe of this coffee maker makes eight 4oz. cups. Every morning, I need to repeat the process twice since I brew a carafe and a half to ensure there’s enough coffee for both of us. This coffee maker would be perfect if the water tank were larger so that a larger carafe of coffee could be brewed. There is one final note. There is no mention of coffee filters in the write up on Amazon so I didn’t know that even 1 or 2 complimentary filters were not included. Hence, a run to the grocery store the first morning. Also, no mention of the filter type in the instruction booklet either, although there is a Q & A on the Amazon page where it explains it uses a paper filter, cone type, #4. Be careful, the instruction booklet has a few typos and partial sentences that you need to use common sense to fill in. Enjoy your coffee!!”

There was a small learning curve for us on this machine as it has a lot more features than we’ve used before. Great for our thermoses, single cup, and carafes. It’s efficient and handles a variety of sizes which works for all of our household. Brew time is fast. We seem to like it using a bit less grounds and on the rich setting. Keeps carafe warm for a nice period of time. No worries about filters collapsing. The frother was a fun addition for my hot cocoa this winter as well. Easy to keep clean. I’ve had 2 Cuisinart, the previous one lasted 8 years, which was pretty good as I use this daily to make anything from 10-12cups. The coffee brews really hot and stays hot, which I like. The “beep” is loud but that doesn’t bother me as I use the program and in the bedroom I can hear when it’s done.
