Customer Reviews

Customer Review: “What can I say. It’s a microwave and it works as it should, but one of my favorite features is that you can change the volume of the beeps and noises. I wake up earlier than the rest of the family, so having these quieter alerts makes it nice so I don’t have to wake up the rest of the house cooking my breakfast. It fits exactly where the old one used to and was easy to install with the help of one other person to hold it in place for mounting. The interior is very easy to clean.I sometimes use different power levels other than just full blast, and the way to adjust the power levels is a little different than what I was used to, but after I figured it out it was an easy adjustment for me. The LED interior light makes it nice and bright inside, and overall a great value for the features that are included.”

Customer Review: “Works great, really happy with it. Some other reviewers complained about the plug. It’s a non-issue. Either replace your existing receptacle if you have to or installed in a new kitchen install the correct receptacle. A microwave should be on a dedicated 20A circuit anyway, but it would be fine on 15A it only draws 8 on 120V power. I cut off the plug and hardwired mine it’s inside a cabinet anyway. For half the price of a similar product from a name brand this one is working really well.”

Customer Reviews

Customer Review: “Our old micro died after faithfully serving us for years. We needed a replacement that fit in the existing space. This bad boy slipped right in without a hitch. It lights up, beeps and makes that strange micro noise as advertised. Cooks well too.”

Customer Review: “My previous over-the-range microwave was an LG model that failed 366 days after I bought it. When I read the installation instructions for that brand I realized I was in over my head and hired somebody to install it for me.When I ordered this GE JVM3160RFSS 1.6 Cu. Ft. Stainless Steel microwave I wasn’t sure if I would need to hire somebody or not. After I received it and read the instructions it was evident that not only were the instructions clear and easy to understand, the “U” shaped mounting bracket made the installation easy compared to the LG model which has just a bottom rail that requires millimeter-precision measuring which is practically impossible considering all walls and cabinets are at least a tiny bit wonky. I had never installed an over-the-range microwave before but with the good GE instructions and included hardware I began this job with confidence. The carton, cardboard, and Styrofoam arrived in showroom condition. Not a puncture, tear, dent, or abrasion to be seen. I was therefore surprised when I removed the microwave and discovered it was actually banged up quite a bit. There were several dents on the edges and the unit was no longer plumb. I tested it out for a few days and it functioned fine, so I decided to install it anyways because the damage was mostly limited to areas that would be covered by the cabinets and the remaining damage would be difficult to spot unless you were looking for it (the front, stainless steel, etc areas were fine). Normally I would have returned it but I had already refused one that was soaked and damaged in shipping and didn’t have the patience for a third round. The installation was relatively painless except for the top screws which go into the counter above. Two holes were placed almost underneath the cabinet doors and the third would have gone too close to a cabinet wall to work a screwdriver. Also the screws were very poor quality with very soft heads. Even using a hand screwdriver it was nearly impossible to screw them in without rounding them out. I was only able to install 2 of 3 top screws but it is still very sturdy because the wall rail is what really bears the weight. Because the unit was no longer completely plumb from being banged up (the center bowed up slightly) there is a tiny gap on either side where the top of the microwave meets the top cabinet, but I think I’m the only one who can see it because I know its there. The top screw holes really need to be an inch further back and each an inch closer to center. Our cabinets are kit cabinets from a major manufacturer, installed in millions of homes, so it seemed odd to me the holes on the microwave were seemingly installed in the most difficult possible location for an installation.Although the instructions state that two people are required for installation, I had no problem doing it myself. Mostly because the instructions were so good I was able to minimize my time lifting and setting into the bottom rail. The microwave functions great. Because the keypad isn’t illuminated it’s impossible to use without overhead lights on, but I knew that before purchasing so no point deductions there. If the unit continues to function properly I will leave this review at 3.5 stars. This is possibly the quietest microwave I’ve ever owned and the surface light is very bright. The fan moves a lot of air without as much noise as one would expect. If I had another home that needed a microwave, I would buy another one of these but would hope they fix whatever problem causes a banged up microwave to be delivered in a pristine box. And the problem with the overhead screws not fitting a major supplier of cabinetry. One inch back and to the middle with each hole would solve immeasurable problems.”

Customer Reviews

Customer Review: “Allow me to paint you a story of our time before this microwave. My husband and I have gone through exactly 2 microwaves in our 11 year relationship before landing on this one. Our first was a tiny thing made in 2004 that could barely manage cup o’ noodle. It finally died sounding like the cries of a thousand whales back in late 2017. It had a good long life of burnt popcorn and cold reheated food.We went without a microwave because we were dirt broke at the time from finally becoming homeowners (oof our savings), and then my in-laws graced us with their microwave that *they* had gotten as a wedding gift in Canada in.. 1988. I used to say that the microwave was almost as old as I was until we found the manufacturing date was April 1988. Dang, the microwave was now officially one month older than me. Still had to deal with uneven cooking, burnt popcorn or half popped bags, and a defrost function that only seemed to work half the time and literally cook the food the other half. This beast of a microwave is an enigma in the fact that it has somehow survived all these years without even needing anything replaced. Honestly the microwave still “works”. I can relate heavily to this microwave. After the last few years of me completely swearing off of trying to make microwave popcorn, my husband complaining about even more burnt popcorn and unpopped kernels at the same time, I finally asked if we could manage to scrape some money together to get an actual working microwave. After much debating, I was tasked with researching a good microwave that was big enough and mostly inexpensive enough. I had heard a bit about this microwave and a few others and ultimately decided on this one. The price was right, the size was perfect, the functionality was great, being able to turn off literally all the beeping was fantastic. Unfortunately the first one we got was mostly DOA and it was really disappointing, especially since I had to move a microwave that I’m sure weighed about 50lbs, I wish I was joking. Amazon took care of the return and replacement real easy and quick, and the new-new microwave came today. The first test was popcorn. Oh boy. Since everyone says “don’t use the popcorn button”, I definitely didn’t. Unfortunately the microwave did burn the bag of popcorn at full power. So, I decided to actually use the popcorn button. I hit the popcorn button twice (setting for a 3oz bag) just to make sure it would have enough time to heat up and pop. Oh boy. I was not prepared for what happened. The popcorn actually popped! And it only took maybe a minute and a half! No burnt popcorn *and* most of the kernels were popped. Our toddler rejoiced that mommy had actually popped a bag of popcorn, “Yay! You did it mommy!”Second, I defrosted a 1lb package of frozen ground beef. Woo, that was a breeze. Set the defrost for the weight and let it go, though it did warm the edges a bit too much but it was quick and didn’t cook it like our last microwaves.Third and most terrifying. Before this microwave, I had gotten used to putting a mug of coffee/tea/water/whatever to heat/reheat for a minute or more and it not even being hot-hot. I stuck a mug of water (with a few tapioca pearls in it) in the microwave to test and set it for one minute, after a short time I glanced into the microwave and discovered it was actually boiling. A very loud proclamation of “Oh my god!” rang from myself in the kitchen. I promptly called my husband over to also observe what the mug of water was doing. He also loudly proclaimed “Oh my god!”In short: I can’t believe what I used to consider “normal” for a microwave. This one is more than leaps and bounds better than what we “had to just deal with” in a time of penny pinching and saving money. We’re finally mostly comfortable and were in desperate need of a good quality microwave. In very short: I love this microwave.”

Customer Review: “This microwave is better quality than expected. Not that I was looking for cheap, but it was above good. Every feature described is great functionality and easy to use. Great size for the countertop. Quiet as well, i liked that.”

Customer Reviews

Customer Review: “We really like this GE 1050w Microwave Oven. We choose it because it have a comprhensive set of cooking features and and seemed to offer substantial value at that price point. It’s a nice compact size but quite powerful, easy to use control panel and the Air Fry function was an extra benefit and works well too. Our last Japanese brand microwave oven last almost 20 years so hopefully the product reliability will be there for the GE one. I would have like to have a more detailed user manual included with the product. We’ve only been a it for a little over a month and I plan to provide a more detailed review in the future.”

Customer Review: “Admit, I bought this oven primarily for its size, but am finding its versatility impressive. The, “combi,” mode, in particular, makes for the best mixed vegetable dishes. I cook raw, cut up, seasoned and olive oil spritzed root veggies for twelve minutes, then add frozen vegetables to the same glass roasting pan, spritz once more, toss and cook for another twelve to fourteen minutes and they’re delicious. The air fry mode works well, too. The oven is quiet, and the lights are not annoyingly bright. Am finding the buttons easy to read even for my older eyes (I don’t cook in the dark) and the hot oven warning beep stops immediately upon pushing the, “cancel/off,” button. Looks nice on the counter, too. Overall, consider it a fabulous value and a fine replacement for my microwave. Am thoroughly enjoying this new oven.”

Complete Buying Guide for Best Microwave Convection Over The Range

Choosing the best microwave convection over the range can feel like a big decision with so many options out there. This buying guide will walk you through the essential factors to consider, ensuring you pick the perfect appliance for your kitchen.

Essential Factors We Consider

When selecting an over the range convection microwave, several key features contribute to its overall performance and user satisfaction:

  • Capacity: Measured in cubic feet, capacity determines how much food you can cook at once. For individuals, 1.0-1.5 Cu.Ft might be fine, but families often prefer 1.6 Cu.Ft or more.
  • Wattage: Higher wattage (1000W+) generally means faster and more even cooking. Look for at least 900-1000W for efficient microwave performance.
  • Convection Power: This feature allows your microwave to act like a small oven, baking and roasting. Consider how often you’ll use this and look for models with good convection fan performance.
  • Ventilation (CFM): The Cubic Feet per Minute (CFM) rating indicates how powerful the exhaust fan is. Higher CFM (300+ is good) means better removal of smoke, steam, and odors, especially important if you cook a lot on your stovetop.
  • Cooking Presets & Sensor Cooking: Pre-programmed settings simplify cooking common items. Sensor cooking automatically adjusts cooking time based on food moisture, preventing over or undercooking.
  • Installation & Size: Most OTR microwaves are 30 inches wide, but 24-inch models are available for smaller spaces. Always measure your cabinet opening before purchasing. Consider if you need a convertible vent (recirculating or ducted).
  • Noise Level: Pay attention to customer reviews regarding noise, especially for the fan and general operation, as a noisy appliance can be disruptive.
  • Cleaning Features: Look for easy-to-clean interiors and dishwasher-safe filters for convenience.

Budget Planning

Microwave convection over the range units vary widely in price, typically ranging from $200 to over $600. Basic models with essential microwave and convection functions can be found on the lower end, while those with higher wattage, larger capacity, advanced sensor cooking, and powerful ventilation systems will be at the higher end. Decide which features are must-haves versus nice-to-haves to align with your budget. Remember that investing in a good quality appliance can save you money in the long run through durability and energy efficiency.

Final Thoughts

A well-chosen over the range convection microwave can be a transformative addition to your kitchen, offering incredible versatility and saving space. By focusing on capacity, wattage, convection performance, ventilation, and user-friendly features, you can confidently select a model that will meet your culinary needs for years to come. Don’t rush the decision; take your time to compare and find the perfect fit for your home.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is a microwave convection over the range?

A: A microwave convection over the range combines the rapid heating of a microwave with the even cooking of a convection oven, all in a unit that installs above your stovetop. This saves counter space and often includes a built-in exhaust fan to ventilate your cooking area.

Q: How does a convection microwave differ from a regular microwave?

A: A regular microwave heats food using electromagnetic waves. A convection microwave adds a fan and a heating element to circulate hot air, similar to a traditional oven. This allows it to bake, roast, and brown food, giving you crispy results that a standard microwave cannot achieve.

Q: Can I install an over the range microwave myself?

A: While it’s possible for a handy individual to install an over the range microwave, it typically requires two people due to the weight and involves electrical wiring and proper mounting. If you’re not comfortable with these tasks, it’s best to hire a professional to ensure safety and proper functionality.

Q: What capacity do I need for my over the range convection microwave?

A: The ideal capacity depends on your household size and cooking habits. For small households (1-2 people), 1.0-1.5 Cu.Ft might suffice. For families or those who cook larger meals, a capacity of 1.6 Cu.Ft or more (up to 2.1 Cu.Ft) is recommended to accommodate bigger dishes and casserole trays.

Q: Are convection microwaves noisy?

A: Convection microwaves can be slightly noisier than standard microwaves due to the internal convection fan and the exhaust fan. However, modern designs often prioritize quiet operation. Check customer reviews for specific models to gauge their real-world noise levels, especially the CFM rating for the exhaust fan, which directly correlates with its operational sound.
