The heat plate will usually get a bit rusty after several years but this is a solid large capacity coffee maker that consistently make great coffee. After nearly 6 years the old unit began leaking a little. I though it was just a spill but ends up it was leaking. I purchased this same coffeemaker because it has been a good machine for our needs. I have read about people having issues with the lid but fortunately we are intelligent enough to actually put the lid on properly. It actually just snaps on – Easy-peesey! We have never had any issues with the carafe leaking or pouring badly. Our has always managed to pour as expected. This model BVMC-DT102 coffee maker appears to be an updated version of our prior model. As far as we are concerned, this coffee maker is perfect in every way. Absolutely love the thermal stainless steel carafe which is a much better option than the el cheapo hotplate style makers with a glass carafe. No safety concerns or burnt coffee. With the press to pour lid you don’t have to contend with sloshing or spillage. Set it for delay brew and you can wake up to piping hot fresh coffee. The carafe keeps the coffee hot and fresh for hours. Simple to set and operate. No need to reset the delay brew time – remembers the prior setting. Just fill the water reservoir, add filter and coffee, push the button and you are good to go (but remember to empty any remaining coffee in the carafe or you will wake up to a puddle on your countertop – don’t ask how I know this). The removable water reservoir and filter basket are also great features. Makes getting the machine ready for its next round a breeze. While it is too soon to comment on long term reliability, have had it in service for about a week now. Probably brewed 10 or 12 pots of coffee in that time. No problems or concerns to report – functions exactly as it should. Customer Review: “I have had the normal range of cheap coffee makers, typically replaced when the glass carafe broke. Then I got a thermal maker from Black and Decker, which had numerous flaws (I wrote a less than flattering review of that one). So this time, I made the effort to read reviews. This one has lots and they are really, really helpful. Some are glowing, and some are not, so I appreciate and respect all of the views expressed, and don’t discount anything negative people have said. My perspective is: moving from a low-end thermal maker that had all the issues this Mr. Coffee model claims to resolve, I have in the first few days of use been completely impressed. The water reservoir on the right is easily accessible, even in a relatively tight space to the side, since it lifts straight up. The basket on the right needs about 6” of clearance on the side to pull out. (So under a cabinet might not be a great place for it). Both are easily filled. Markings on the water reservoir are clear and legible. Several people have complained about the water cover, but it seems simple and fine to me; just resting on top. I live in an area with excellent tap water, so have not used the supplied water filter. Normal paper basket filters work fine for me; I don’t make a full pot (usually 6 “cups”), but no sign of overflowing as reported by others, even with coffee ground rather finely.(My previous cheaper maker would often overflow and was a pain to fill and hard to read) The coffee is hot. Perfectly hot. I like that I can rinse and empty the carafe with a swish of warm water, but even when it was cold the coffee was hot. The coffee stays hot in the carafe as promised, for hours.(My previous maker neither of these were true, even before the gasket seal fell out) Note that there is no heating element to keep the coffee warm, only to boil the water during the phase of making coffee. I looked at several Bunn models; they all had heaters to keep water near brewing temperature, which seems wasteful and unnecessary to me. As advertised, the coffee from this model brews very quickly. The coffee tastes great. This was a total surprise for me. I love a great cup of coffee, and have tried many different makers, methods, beans, grinds and so on over the years, but never was able to get something I loved at home without jumping through hoops. This model has made me a few really exceptionally good pots of coffee, without me doing anything special. I think this is because the water is hot and distributed over the grounds in the filter basket evenly. Several people remarked that coffee was a little weaker; I had a different experience: same grind and amount of coffee/water as my old maker and I get much richer and more flavorful coffee. This is really what is making me smile. The carafe seats nicely into the space for it. It feels solid and “locked in”.(previous maker would often overflow if carafe was not seated just perfectly. Others have said this can happen with this model, but it seems far less likely to me.) Carafe pours cleanly and at a normal rate as far as I can see. Others have said it’s slow because it’s a vacuum seal, and perhaps that’s true, but it’s not remarkable slow to my eye. Front panel controls are nice looking and seem well constructed, as do other parts. It doesn’t feel cheap. We’ll see — I have been so sorely disappointed in so many products made these days, even high-end name brands. We bought a toaster fro Krups and the lettering wore off the knobs in a matter of months. Really? As I mentioned in my review of my old Black and Decker coffee maker, the plastic button pad peeled up and I had to stick it down again. Really? So fingers crossed, but both design and construction seem solid and durable. After a few days, this seems like a very well made, thoughtfully designed product that does a simple job very well.”

Customer Review: “I’m a coffee enthusiast. With any hobby, you can spend SO MUCH MONEY, and you reach a point of diminishing returns. Coffee is no exception. However, this coffee maker meets the perfect mix of value and performance. It is easy to use, and every cup of coffee is consistent, hot, and flavorful, providing you make it in the same way. The machine itself looks quite nice. The three buttons, right to left are: Power – turns it on. Turns it off Half Capacity – This does something with the warming plate when you make a smaller pot. I make 750mL a day, which comes to be 5 cups on this machine. I keep it turned on. Blooming – This alters the brew cycle to pour some water over the grounds… pause for a while, then brews the rest of the pot. I’m undecided on this feature, but my girlfriend prefers it. Use and cleanup is easy. 1. Pour water into the water reservoir (max 1250mL) Tip: I use a pitcher that only ever contains clean water for this. Instead of using the carafe like is common. This helps everything stay cleaner, longer. 2. Add beans into a cone filter. Put that filter in the container. 3. Turn it on. Wait a bit. Drink Coffee 4. Toss grounds, rinse stuff off, let it dry for tomorrow If you’re this far in the review, you’re probably someone looking to increase their coffee game. And you’ve probably read about ratios of beans to water etc. 1:16, 1:17, 1:18 etc. I actually prefer mine on the weaker side (so I can drink more without getting jittery!) And with quality ingredients and equipment, you don’t need to make a cup of sludge to have any flavor. My preferred ratio 1:18, or with numbers — 40g of beans. 750mL of water. Finally if you’re still reading, here’s my personal ranking of what makes good coffee: 1. Good water 2. Good whole bean coffee 3. Grinding your beans right before brewing in a 4. Good grinder 5. Measure your beans and water and keep it consistent 6. The coffee maker So yeah, it makes a difference, but not as much as like the first 3 do. This was the last piece of coffee equipment I upgraded, from just an old Mr. Coffee drip, and it is better. but not as night & day difference as switching to whole beans ground early.”

Customer Review: “I have made coffee with the Krups coffee maker for the past 7 mornings. Over the past decade, I’ve relied on a French Press and have always ground my own coffee beans. It took a while to figure out the right proportions, especially since I needed to use a finer grind. I’ve finally adapted to the Krups. The coffee maker looks good and fits well on the counter. It is compact and doesn’t overwhelm the area. This is my routine: I use 40 grams of quality (Peet’s) whole bean coffee which I grind on a medium setting. I fill the carafe with 48 ounces of water (1420ml) which I weigh (1360 gm) so I can have a consistent tasting cup of coffee every morning. It took several days to get the proportions correct. Using a French Press required more coffee beans to achieve the desired strength. (Forty-eight ounces of water brings the top past the maximum line and just to the bottom of the little hole in the water tank. I had no problem with this at all.) If you are a coffee enthusiast, and taste and consistency matter to you, it is important to use premium coffee beans that you grind immediately before use, fresh cold water and the same proportions each time (adjusted to your taste.) There is no more fine silt at the bottom of my cup that you get with a French Press. The coffee brews fast, though I haven’t tried the ½ anti-drip function that makes a slower, stronger pot. I find the strength with no anti-drip to be just fine. Having coffee with the perfect strength matters to me—it shouldn’t be overpowering, but it also can’t be watery or too weak. The coffee is rich and robust, and I think the Krups machine enhances its flavor well. I have used the “blooming button” each time because I was intrigued by the “extra fullness and character” that the instruction booklet claims the blooming provides. The concept of releasing some water to soak the beans and then continuing the brewing process seemed to make sense. You can try both ways and see if there is a difference. Clean-up is quick. You just slide out the filter holder containing the grinds and dump them. Then wash the carafe. For me, there is a negative with this coffee maker. When I read 8-cup coffee maker I thought 8 American cups where a cup is usually a mug or at the very least, 8 oz. Not the case with this coffee maker. We are two people. Between us, we drink at least two full mugs of coffee each morning. One carafe of this coffee maker makes eight 4oz. cups. Every morning, I need to repeat the process twice since I brew a carafe and a half to ensure there’s enough coffee for both of us. This coffee maker would be perfect if the water tank were larger so that a larger carafe of coffee could be brewed. There is one final note. There is no mention of coffee filters in the write up on Amazon so I didn’t know that even 1 or 2 complimentary filters were not included. Hence, a run to the grocery store the first morning. Also, no mention of the filter type in the instruction booklet either, although there is a Q & A on the Amazon page where it explains it uses a paper filter, cone type, #4. Be careful, the instruction booklet has a few typos and partial sentences that you need to use common sense to fill in. Enjoy your coffee!!”
