Pergo Flooring!
So you’ve probably already read my out of debt post. Yes, we are finally out of debt! No more payments…we arewere done! Well obviously we missed it because today we just went out and financed almost $3000 of pergo flooring for our main level. I *hate* spending money! HATE.IT!!! I don’t know why but it really stresses me out and makes me want to puke!
BUT our carpet is ruined!!! Understatement of the year alert!!! When we moved into our home 5 years ago we liked our carpet…didn’t love it but liked it. It’s Berber (sp?) and not really a color I liked but new enough and still in pretty good shape. That was until our first night here painting before we even moved in. Our then 2 year old daughter spilled a water bottle and guess what happened? It turned brown! We couldn’t get it to come out. The previous owners thought they’d save themselves a little money by not replacing the old padding under the carpet when they layed down the new carpet. Thanks a lot! So whenever one of my kids would spill something or my husband would come home with dirty shoes it would stain. We even had carpet cleaners come out and clean our carpets a couple years ago after I had used a steam cleaner and it ruined it even more. It looked great for about 2 or 3 days and then BAM! It was back.
So now that we have three kids, three therapists coming to our house and sitting on our floor three days a week, my son’s numerous crazy ass allergies and so on, we decided that it was finally time to get new floors. But seriously, do you know how much they charge for installation? About the same price of the freakin product! $3000! No thanks! I’ll do it myself! So right now I’m sitting here freaking out because A) we have another debt to pay off. B) We have to do the floor ourselves…or should I say *I* have to do the floors *myself* and C) $3000 is a lot of money for us! Yes, it’s financed with 12 months no payments and no interest but still! I think I’m going to go puke now!
The floor is really pretty though and well worth the money! It’s not the exact same as the picture above but pretty darn close. And it already has the padding attached to we don’t have to worry about that. I can’t wait to see what it is going to look like after it’s all done. I’m going to try to find one or two friends that I can bribe with free food and boos to come over and help me. Wish me luck! lol
I’ll update with before and after pics as soon as it’s all finished!
Have you ever done pergo (faux wood floors) yourself? Was it hard? How long did it take you? Do you like them now? What are your pros and cons on carpet vs. wood floors? I want to know all your details, ideas and opinions so spill it!

We have the same flooring throughout our house, much cheaper than real wood floors and holds up better. But it’s a major PIA to keep clean because you can’t use mops or any water on it, pretty much only leaves you with a swiffer.
I hope you guys know what you’re doing with the install though. We paid to have ours installed for us because the flooring seperates and buckles in the first year and we needed that one year warranty on install for them to come back out and fix it.
It will definitely be cleaner that carpet though!
Congrats!
Stefanie,
I have never laid any floor. My husband is in the process of laying oak wood flooring throughout our house. It doesn’t look hard
, but I know the waiting for completion is hard. I’m thankful that he knows how to do it because labor prices are a killer. All I have to do is cook, clean the house, take care of the kids, etc. but I can afford.
I prefer wood floors. We’ve had tile/slate and wood. I like carpet, but don’t prefer it in my home because of all of the “stuff” it captures.
See if this video helps how to lay Pergo flooring.
Well after talking about it and all the debt and considering we just got out of debt. We decided to cancel our order and wait. We’re going to save some money so that we can pay for it in full instead.
It was a hard choice but the economy is so tough right now! I’ll have to just be patient and pray that when it is the right time we will get it.
Stef, something you can do that we did for the carpet in our bedroom if you’re worried about the cost of laying the flooring is hire someone under the table. Meaning you pay them cash at a much lower rate. But the downside is you still don’t have the warranty.
I’ve thought about that. I do have a friend that does amazing work all by himself; not for a living but for a hobby. But he is busy redoing his aunts house for her. Plus we really do need to save the money first and then buy it and not finance it. I think I’d do ok doing it by myself, I love doing projects like that but I would want someone to start it with me so I could get the hang of it. KWIM? (sigh) Guess I’ll have to wait a while longer.
