We all know that Halloween, for kids, is all about the candy and dressing up, right? Well eating healthy organic foods has become a new way of life/health for many of our kids, family and friends. So what do you do when you only let your kids eat organic foods but let them go trick or treating? Do you let them trick or treat for their candy and eat it too? Do you keep the wonderful sugary goodness for yourself, throw it away, replace it with organic candy or let them gorge themselves on sugar, high fructose corn syrups and food dyes until they have enough to put them into a diabetic coma?
My best friend of 26 years only lets her kids eat organic foods, drinks and candies. Her kids are healthy and of good weight and are used to the organic eating lifestyle. However, she does let them go trick or treating but I’m not really sure how she handles the candy aspect of it all. I will ask her tomorrow at our annual Halloween party.
But I’m curious, if you and your family are strict organic eaters how do you handle all the Halloween candy in your home?

I am not one of those organic families, although I do try to be healthier when we can. But I know a family who is like this to the extreme, and they just don’t let their kids go trick or treating. I think it’s very sad. They won’t go to any event that has food involved either, even if they could just bring their own. I just think it’s so sad for the kids who have to miss out on so much stuff, just because the parents don’t want them to eat something.
Oh, and our other neighbor’s orthodontist is buying back candy from kids, so she’s letting her kids go, and then sell it to the orthodontist. She said the kids would much rather have the money than the candy, so why not?
lol Trisha! That’s a good way to get kids to not eat candy!
Well, I’m not a eco/crunchy/whatever Mom, BUT I do not want my daughter to eat junk either. We try to give her healthy foods and buy organic if we can. She does not get candy as a regular thing, it is a rare treat. On Halloween, we go through her spoils and pick out the things with nuts (she’s allergic) and things that we just don’t want her to have at all. Then we hide it and dole it out in small doses.
My daughter got an organic smores bar in her school treat bag. And it was delicious – she’s a good sharer and gave me a bite. We don’t make any attempt to eat organic *sigh*. There’s only so much I can do and that’s just too much for me to attempt. We do eat as many fruits and veggies as possible, go for whole-grains and try to make healthy choices, though.
