Both of our boys were about 18 months when they hit the big boy beds. Both of them started to hate the crib. We bought bunk beds with our first knowing that either if we had another or if he had friends over when he was older the bunks would come in handy. The top bunk has rails that slide out and go all the way down the sides. Both boys wouldn't get out of bed on their own for the longest time. My 2.5yo still won't. They act like it's a crib in that regard, but like sleeping in it better. I guess it's the lower sides.
