The Hippocratic Press
I have learned over the years that explaining childhood illnesses or anything for that matter to a child is hard work. They never really get it and always have more questions that, at times, I cannot answer.
As many of you know my kids have a load of health issues!!! All together there is:ADD/ADHD, Duarte Galactosemia, asthma, eczema, major indoor/outdoor and food allergies, SPD (Sensory Processing Disorder), Vision Processing Disorder, enzyme deficiencies, Alopecia Areata, eye problems…ahh the list goes on and on.
The hardest thing so far has been that my two younger children have tummy issues. They were born without the sucrase enzyme in their GI tracks. And for a long time my son was in and out of hospitals because no one knew what was wrong with him. He was a major juice drinker and fruit eater. He was loosing weight and completely stopped growing because all the sugar, fruit, high fructose corn syrup and juice was causing chronic diarrhea. So obviously explaining this to him has proved to be difficult. He just knows that he has a special tummy and has to be on a special diet. But with his older sister not having this issue she is allowed to eat pretty much whatever she wants when it comes to fruit, so we do let them cheat every now and then. But we have to monitor their ‘movements’ so they don’t start loosing weight again.
So with all that being said, you can imagine my excitement when I saw the Dr. Hippo books online! They are kids books written by a Pediatrician, Dr. Charlotte Cowan, to help explain childhood illnesses to kids. The books not only explain, in a kid friendly way, childhood illnesses but they also help kids realize that they will feel better soon. They are well written and very colorful, well illustrated books and my kids love them! I think that I could probably recite them word for word already!
Dr. Cowan has 5 books available in the Dr. Hippo Series that explain: sore throats, vomiting and diarrhea, ear infections, colds and fevers. Here is the list of books in the series:

(Click any book to learn more about each one!)
and my favorite…
Each book has a hardback cover with 32 pages in all. And for parents there is a Parent’s Guide in the back of each book to help explain these same childhood illnesses to the parent.
Dr. Cowan has been so very kind to offer some of these books as giveaways to help explain these issues with your kids. And I want to add that she has also donated all of these books to Bloggers Give! So over the next month or so I will be giving away all 5 books!!! The first two that I am going to do giveaways on are, Sadie’s Sore Throat and Katie Caught a Cold. The first winner will win one of those two books of their choice and the other winner will win the book that is left. Here’s how you can enter to win.

I love Childrens books
The author was a pediatrician at Mass Children’s Hospital and had a childhood love of reading. She wrote these books thinking that kids would cope better with their illnesses if they understood them.

I just love these books! I learned that the story illustrations are matched up to the Q&A in the Parents guide to help those parents who do not read English fluently.
My favorite book is Katie Caught A Cold, because kids are always catching colds and it would be a great resource to help them understand the process.
